How to Not Flip When Whitewater Kayaking

Do you prefer staying upright when you whitewater kayak? Me too!

Flipping over is normal and part of the sport so it’s important that we be kind to ourselves when it happens. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow.

Having said that, kayaking is more fun when you’re upright and breathing 🙂

In this vlog I do video review on two runs that I had on Corkscrew rapid on the Chattooga River.

The first run I almost flipped  and had to do a big high brace to right myself. I walked back up to run it again, corrected my line and came through smoothly.

As I review my maneuvering I hit on 4 key points:

  1. Vision
  2. Boat angle
  3. Strokes
  4. Keeping the boat underneath you
