Be honest — are you making the same paddling mistake over and over again, but not quite sure why it keeps happening?
Yeah… we’ve all been there. 🙋♀️
Here’s the thing: it’s time to bring in one of the most powerful (and underused) tools in your paddling toolbox — video review.
GoPros Aren’t Just for the Rad Edit
I know, I know — GoPros sometimes get a bad rap. We tend to think they’re just for capturing
the epic drops, sweet lines, or “send it!” moments (… or at least the moments we hope look that way on camera 😅).
But here’s the truth: a GoPro or any head cam is actually one of the BEST investments you can make in your skills development.
👉 Top athletes use video review to refine their technique — and you can too.
In fact, video review is one of my absolute favorite tools as a coach, and honestly, I don’t think instruction is complete without it.
The Power of a Critical Eye (and Slow Motion)
One of my superpowers as a coach is my trained critical eye — I can spot inefficiencies and help you correct them quickly, in a way that makes sense.
But guess what? You can train your own critical eye too.
When you’re able to pause, rewind, and slow down your paddling footage, you get the chance to actually see what’s going on — not just what you think happened. And that clarity is where real breakthroughs happen.
Here’s what to start looking for when you dive into your own video review:
🧍♀️ Body: Your Power Center
Your boat fits you like a glove. Which means your body position directly affects your boat’s performance.
Lean too far one way? Your boat’s off balance.
Lean back? Your stern might grab and flip you.
Are you rotating your torso for full body energy transfer?
When rolling, is your left hip not releasing leading to you lifting your head too soon?
Your body tells the story of your efficiency (or lack thereof). Pay attention.
🚣♀️ Boat: Angle and Edge Matter
Your boat angle and edge can either make or break your line.
Are you squaring up to waves, or holding your angle out of the eddy?
Did you engage enough edge on that directional boof?
During your roll, is your boat actually rolling up — or just sticking to your torso?
Your boat’s angle and edge offer clear clues about why that tricky move worked — or didn’t.
🛶 Blade: The Silent Saboteur
Let’s talk paddle placement — because it’s often where things go sideways.
Are you planting a bow draw when you really need a stern draw?
Is your forward stroke catch happening at your knees… or your feet?
Are you burying your blade or lily-dipping?
Think you’re correcting ferry angle with stern draws — but really doing short, panicky forward strokes?
Your blade work matters more than you might realize — and video helps you see it clearly.
The Camera Doesn’t Lie (and That’s a Good Thing)
Every time I do video review with my clients, they’re blown away by how much they learn. The footage doesn’t sugarcoat or hide anything — and that honesty is exactly what helps you grow.
