Fact vs Story: A Mindset Tool for Overcoming Fear in Whitewater Kayaking

Share:

If you’ve eve scouted a rapid or started to practice your roll, and thought, “What if I mess this up?” — you’re not alone.

Whitewater kayaking is one of the most mentally challenging sports out there. The river constantly pushes us into discomfort — and that’s exactly where growth lives.

But here’s the thing: fear doesn’t just show up in the rapid. It shows up in our stories — the ones we tell ourselves after things don’t go as planned, and even worse, before we even get started.

The “Fact vs. Story” Technique for Building Mental Agility

In kayaking (and life), fear is a built-in part of our nervous system — it’s not going away. But you can learn to work with it instead of letting it run the show.

That’s where the Fact vs. Story tool comes in.

Facts are what actually happened:

“I flipped. I missed my roll. I swam. I got to shore.”

Story is what your mind adds on top:

“I’m a bad kayaker.”

“No one will want to paddle with me.”
“I should quit.”

The problem is, we often collapse those two things — and start believing our story is the truth.

When you separate the facts from the story, you take back your power. You can reframe the narrative, see your progress clearly, and choose courage instead of self-criticism.

How to Reframe Your River Story

Next time something feels hard — a rapid, a swim, a setback — pause and ask:

  • What are the facts?

  • What story am I telling myself about those facts?

  • How can I reframe this story to reflect learning and growth?

For example:

“That swim showed me I can stay calm under pressure.”
“I got my boat and gear back — that’s progress.”
“I faced fear and took action anyway. That’s courage.”

The goal isn’t to silence fear — it’s to change your relationship with it.
